2017 has been a very sad year for us all. On March 11th my husband Stephen passed away after a short and unexpected illness. He is sadly missed by all who knew him as winessed by the number of friends, clients and dealers who attended his funeral at St Mary's Church, Witney.
Since then we have carried on with our commitments and exhibited at both the BADA and CADA Fairs having successful showings at both events. Our next outing will be at the LAPADA Fair in their spectacular setting amongst the trees in Barclay Square. (15 - 20 September 2017) We are also planning an exhibition in the autumn, showcasing our latest collection of samplers. This will be held as usual in our Witney showrooms. More details will be available nearer the time.
For those of you who are unaware the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambrdge has an exhibition open until 8 April 2018. 'Sampled Lives: Samplers from the Fitzwilliam Museum'. This exhibition displays over 100 samplers from the Museum?s excellent but often unseen collection.
The samplers have been chosen not to demonstrate the quality of the schoolgirl embroidery of the past, but rather to be studied as stitched documents. By analysing and interpreting the motifs and patterns, the pictorial elements and inscriptions, each sampler tells a story of female accomplishment, of a girl's growing sense of identity, of a desire for education and the changing attitudes to, and opportunities for, employment in adult life. Each section is devoted to a particular theme, ranging from the superb skills shown by young needle lace-makers of the seventeenth century, to the accuracy and practicality of the plain sewing samplers made centuries later; anonymous samplers in which symbolic elements illuminate young lives, to those that provide sufficient information to bring to life the particular background and status of an individual girl. With so little recorded information handed down to us about the lives of the ordinary, rather than the elite young females of previous centuries, samplers are one of the few types of artefact that can help to bring about some understanding of the world they inhabited and experienced.
Last year we had an increasing number of embroidery groups visiting us from all corners of the world. This is very exciting as we are ble to share our passion and enthusiasm with like minded people. If you belong to a group and would like to arrange a visit do let us know, perhaps make a day of it and have lunch at The Horse Shoes, an historic pub close by.
We are going to be open by appointment later in the year so please do telephone or e-mail us to make sure we are there. However you are always welcome to ring the door bell on the chance some one is at home and if you catch us in be assured you will be warmly welcomed to look around.
Joy Jarrett and Rebecca Scott.
